Instead of a match between the La Liga champion and the Copa del Rey champion as before, the competition now includes four participating teams. These comprise the top two teams in La Liga and the two finalists of the Copa del Rey.
If one or both of the Copa del Rey finalists also hold the first or second positions in La Liga, the third and fourth-placed teams in the league standings will qualify.
