In discussions regarding Dak Prescott’s future with the Dallas Cowboys, Executive Vice President Stephen Jones remains tight-lipped, emphasizing the team’s primary objective of retaining Prescott’s services.
While Prescott, set to enter the final year of his contract, is expected to engage in extension talks with Dallas, the specifics of negotiations will not be divulged to the public.
“We won’t be providing updates on those negotiations,” Jones stated firmly during a media session at the NFL Scouting Combine. “Progress will continue behind the scenes, and we won’t be sharing details, timing, or amounts.”
Jones reiterated the team’s focus on Prescott’s long-term presence, stressing, “Our whole thing with Dak is him being a Cowboy. That’s our sole focus, and we’re not contemplating anything else.”
Prescott’s stellar performance in the 2023 season, including leading the NFL in completions and touchdown passes, underscores his importance to the Cowboys. However, with his contract set to void in 2025 and containing clauses limiting Dallas’ options for tagging or trading him, the urgency to secure a new deal is evident.
Despite Jones declining to provide a timeline, the pressing need to reach an agreement looms large. Prescott’s substantial cap hit, currently occupying over 20% of the team’s 2024 cap space, underscores the importance of restructuring his contract to facilitate other roster moves.
Addressing the challenge of managing the salary cap amidst priorities like Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, Jones acknowledged the complexity but expressed confidence in navigating the financial landscape to maintain key players.
“Salary cap management is always a challenge, especially with top-tier players,” Jones acknowledged. “But with the cap’s increase and our commitment to these players, we’re optimistic about achieving our goals.”
Despite the financial hurdles, Jones affirmed that retaining Prescott, Lamb, and Parsons remains the organization’s paramount objective, recognizing their value and contributions to the team’s success.
“In the end, it’s about securing the players who drive our success,” Jones affirmed. “While it presents challenges, our commitment to retaining top talent, including our quarterback, remains unwavering.”
