This isn’t the record any team aims for.
On Tuesday night, the Detroit Pistons etched their name in NBA history by becoming the first team to endure a 27-game losing streak within a single season. Their defeat came at the hands of the Brooklyn Nets, concluding with a score of 118-112.
The overall record for the longest losing streak still stands at 28 games, held by the Philadelphia 76ers across two seasons.
In a post-game press conference, 22-year-old guard Cade Cunningham, who contributed 41 points to keep the team competitive, stressed the importance of unity among the players.

“A lot of my positivity comes from just the joy of the game … but there’s nothing positive about this situation right now that we’ve put ourselves in,” he remarked. “So that’s why we’ve got to dig deep and get ourselves out.”
During the same press conference, Pistons’ first-year coach Monty Williams acknowledged that the Nets’ 13-point streak in the second quarter was disheartening for his team, despite a strong initial performance.
SPORTS Detroit Pistons tie the losing streak record “The formula for the game was pretty set,” he explained. “And that’s something that’s plagued us all year long — just having that segment of the game or one quarter that put us in a hole and we just haven’t been able to do enough to overcome.”
Despite disappointed fans chanting “sell the team” after both this last game and the team’s 25th straight loss, owner Tom Gores remained optimistic before the holiday season.
“We have a good core. We have a good foundation. We have all these young players. And we have flexibility,” Gores stated. “So we have to not panic and do the right thing, execute, and have urgency. So that’s our balance.”
According to a survey on the NBA website, 10% of general managers voted the Pistons as the team with the most promising young core.
Next up, the Pistons will face the Celtics in Boston on Thursday.
