During a discussion at the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday, Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard emphasized the team’s determination to keep wide receiver Michael Pittman on board for the 2024 season.
Ballard clarified that the Colts have no intentions of allowing Pittman to enter free agency, indicating that they are prepared to utilize the franchise tag if needed as a contingency plan.
“We’re committed to reaching a deal,” Ballard stated. “The franchise tag remains an option, but our preference is to secure a mutually beneficial agreement.”
The Colts have until March 5 to finalize a long-term contract with Pittman before the franchise tag deadline expires. Should they opt for the franchise tag, it would require negotiations for a multi-year deal to be completed by mid-July.
Pittman’s presence is vital for the Colts’ progression in the upcoming season. As the primary receiver, he achieved career-best figures in 2023 with 109 receptions and 1,152 receiving yards. Known for his adeptness at getting open and securing catches, Pittman’s compatibility with Shane Steichen’s offensive scheme is evident. Retaining him long-term would provide stability and a reliable target for young quarterback Anthony Richardson’s development.
In the event of a protracted negotiation, the franchise tag offers an extended timeframe for both parties to continue discussions.
Meanwhile, Ballard acknowledged the need to fortify the receiving corps, particularly after experiencing depth issues due to injuries in the previous season.
“I take responsibility for enhancing our receiving options,” Ballard admitted. “While we had capable players, the lack of continuity was challenging for our coaches. Moving forward, we’re focused on improving in this area.”
Although Pittman, alongside rookie Josh Downs and Alec Pierce, forms a formidable trio, the Colts aim to bolster their depth, possibly through free agency or the upcoming draft. Ballard expressed optimism about the talent pool in the 2024 receiver draft class, likening it to the strength of previous notable drafts, such as the one featuring Pittman’s contemporaries like Justin Jefferson, Brandon Aiyuk, and CeeDee Lamb.
