Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson continues to show positive strides in his rehabilitation journey following a season-ending shoulder injury sustained in October, including progressing to throwing passes again.
Despite Richardson’s optimistic outlook on his recovery, Colts general manager Chris Ballard, speaking at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, emphasized the need to proceed with caution, drawing from past experiences, particularly Andrew Luck’s rushed return from a shoulder injury.
“Really happy about where he’s at,” Ballard stated regarding Richardson’s progress. “He started throwing, he’s on a rehab program. We’re not gonna, like, I mean, I lived through the last one. And I learned a lot of lessons living through the last one, so, you know, forgive me for being a little cautious, but, ya know.”
Ballard highlighted the importance of adhering to medical advice and ensuring Richardson doesn’t rush his recovery, echoing lessons learned from Luck’s situation. While Richardson’s injury differs from Luck’s, Ballard’s cautionary approach remains pivotal in prioritizing Richardson’s health and longevity over immediate returns.
“Luck and Richardson’s injuries aren’t a one-for-one comparison,” Patra noted, “and the new Colt is in the infantile stages of his pro career. Still, Ballard’s experience living through the Luck fiasco is an instructive point.”
The primary goal remains getting Richardson back on the field for the upcoming season while prioritizing his long-term well-being. Ballard stressed the importance of protecting Richardson, especially as a young quarterback, and providing him with the necessary support to succeed on the field.
“You want to give him as much as you can to be successful,” Ballard remarked. “What you want is I think, you gotta make sure he’s protected. I think you know my philosophy on that. You have to make sure your quarterback, especially a young quarterback, you gotta make sure he’s protected.”
Additionally, Ballard acknowledged the team’s responsibility to surround Richardson with talent to facilitate his development in his second year. The Colts’ approach will likely involve a combination of strategies, including bolstering the roster through free agency and the draft.
As the season approaches, attention will turn to how head coach Shane Steichen navigates the offensive scheme, balancing Richardson’s playmaking abilities with the need to protect his health effectively.
