The Kansas City Chiefs are embarking on what promises to be a significant offseason, starting with the release of wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
Valdes-Scantling, who was entering the final year of his three-year contract with the Chiefs, will generate $12 million in cap savings for Kansas City, as reported by Over the Cap. With impending free agents like Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed to consider, the Chiefs need to manage their finances wisely, and parting ways with Valdes-Scantling is a step in that direction.
Arriving as a notable acquisition with his speed and playmaking ability, Valdes-Scantling’s tenure with the Chiefs mirrored his time with the Green Bay Packers: marked by flashes of brilliance but inconsistency overall.
During his two seasons with Kansas City, he recorded 63 receptions, 1,002 yards, and three touchdowns. Notably, he contributed significantly to the Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl victories. In the 2022 AFC Championship Game, he amassed an impressive 116 yards and one touchdown, while also securing a crucial 16-yard touchdown reception in Super Bowl LVIII, the Chiefs’ sole touchdown in regulation.
With his release, the swift and agile Valdes-Scantling now becomes a free agent, poised to explore opportunities elsewhere in the league.
