Kansas City, MO — Following their hosting of games for the 2026 World Cup, the Kansas City Chiefs have revealed plans for an extensive $800 million renovation of Arrowhead Stadium, the NFL’s third-oldest stadium. The project is expected to span approximately four years.
The success of the renovation hinges on the extension of a three-eighth of a cent tax by voters in Jackson County, Missouri, scheduled for April 2. This tax revenue has traditionally funded upkeep at the Truman Sports Complex, home to both Arrowhead Stadium and neighboring Kauffman Stadium, the latter of which the Kansas City Royals plan to vacate for a new downtown ballpark by the end of the 2030 season.
Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt emphasized the importance of securing financing for the renovation, with the Hunt family committing $300 million toward the endeavor. Hunt stressed that without adequate funding, the Chiefs would not commit to another long-term lease for the stadium.
The renovation project, unveiled during a press conference at Arrowhead, promises comprehensive enhancements across the stadium. These include improvements to seating, luxury amenities, and tailgating facilities, as well as the addition of new parking decks and pedestrian bridges to enhance accessibility.
Significant upgrades are planned both above and below the stadium. A new 360-degree upper concourse will allow for smoother fan circulation and the creation of additional concessions and merchandise areas. Additionally, the Chiefs intend to excavate under the existing structure to develop club spaces akin to those at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Outside the stadium, a tailgating plaza is envisioned on the site of Kauffman Stadium, providing a covered gathering space for game days and year-round events.
While the idea of a roof over Arrowhead Stadium has been floated in the past, it was not considered for this round of renovations. Hunt emphasized the team’s preference for playing outdoors, believing it provides a competitive advantage.
The ambitious renovation project signals the Chiefs’ commitment to modernizing their historic stadium while enhancing the fan experience for years to come.
